Astrakhan is a band with member of Pain Of Salvation, Royal Hunt, House Of Shakira and Misth, the new album "A Slow Ride Towards Death" released for Melodic Passion Records, the third release after the debut album“Retrospective” (2013), “Adrenaline Kiss” in 2016 and the live album "Superstar Experience" (2020) recorded during the tour in 2018 tour in Scandinavia playing "Jesus Christ Superstar".
"A Slow Ride Towards Death" is a dramatic, suggestive and gloomy album just like the great opener "Lonesome Cry", in which the remarkable cutting guitar stands out, the dark side of this piece comes in with drums and bass wrapping as Alexander Lycke's expressive vocals. A hypnotising track that takes shape as it goes along and as the song develops, so do the emotions. It's hard to find a band that can compose in a way that involves the listener.
So moving is 'Lonesome Cry', so strong and harsh, nervous and faceted is 'Take Me With You' with the keyboards and guitars making the piece intense and passionate.
The greatest demonstration of Astrakhan's technique can be found in three tracks, "Never Let You Go", "Youtopia", tracks where the drama is perhaps more marked and at the same time intriguing, and "Until It Ends" which sees Martin Larsson in a very special drumming.
Heavy Dark the penultimate track "Control", with more modern hints but not too far from the elements heard so far.
The ending is more in American style with the beautiful and touching 'M.E 2020', here we find musicality and technicality that weave together the nature and heavy prog style of Astrakhan.
"A Slow Ride Towards Death is an album full of intertwining emotions, its sad vein a vehicle for venting that succeeds in involving and capturing the listener in its sonic coils.
Absolutely not to be missed.
